Parents, Children, and Coronavirus: You're Doing It Right

March 29, 2020

If you’re baking cookies with your kids, you’re doing it right.

If your kids are on their tablets, you’re doing it right.

If your kids are playing outside, you’re doing it right.

If your kids are reading books, you’re doing it right.

If your kids have to get their own snacks while you rest, you’re doing it right.

If your kids are creating art, you are doing it right.

If your kids are watch hours of Disney+ while you work, you’re doing it right.

If your kids are making their beds, you’re doing it right.

If your kids are fighting with each other and driving you crazy, you’re doing it right.

If your kids are wearing pajamas all day and night or for days on end, you’re doing it right.

Whatever you are doing to get through this stressful time with your kids at home, you’re doing it right.

Whoever said that you have to keep them entertained and occupied at all times did nothing to help parents see what is realistic in raising kids. While children do need some structured activities, they also need time to be (safely) on their own, to learn to do tasks, and to figure out how to work out problems. And learning doesn’t always mean constantly acquiring new knowledge. It also means reinforcing things already learned and practice mastering those things. Give yourself a little permission to let your kids show you what they can do.
